(CNN) – Staying on the toilet too long might not be the greatest thing for your health.
According to a study published in the journal PLOS One, extended use of a smartphone during a bowel movement greatly raises a hemorrhoid risk.
People used to read books and magazines in the bathroom, but now a lot of us spend that time endlessly scrolling on smartphones, the study said.
And it found people are reporting a higher rate of hemorrhoids for those who bring their smartphones to the bathroom.
The study’s senior author says the research is concrete evidence of what many have long suspected: People lose track of time in the bathroom when they scroll on their phones.
Health experts have previously recommended spending no more than 10 minutes on the toilet.
