BERKELEY, S.C. (WCSC) – The Medical University of South Carolina is set to break ground on a new hospital and cancer research center in the Nexton area.
The MUSC Health Nexton Medical Center and Hollings Cancer Center is set to be a facility doctors say will fill a major gap in health care access for the region.
The medical center will include a five-story, 192,000-square-foot hospital with a full-service emergency department and radiology services.
Hospital leaders describe it as a more community-focused facility, eliminating the need for patients to travel downtown to MUSC’s main campus.
The hospital will have 70 inpatient beds, compared to the 900 beds at the Charleston peninsula location.
Connected to the hospital will be a three-story, 30,000-square-foot cancer research and treatment center. The Hollings Cancer Center will provide infusion services and include a specialty pharmacy, offering the same level of care patients receive downtown.
Leaders say the goal is to bring those services closer to communities that need them, while also reducing strain on their main hospital, which has faced overbooking challenges in recent years.
The Hollings Cancer Center in Nexton is expected to open in the summer of 2027, with the hospital following in the summer of 2028.
