ODU stuns No. 21 Hokies
Old Dominion defeated a top-25 opponent for the first time since 1998, overcoming No. 21 Virginia Tech 2-1 before about 750 fans at ODU’s stadium.
Brooke Edwards and Riley Mullen scored for the Monarchs, who doused coach Angie Hind with orange liquid after the victory.
ODU (2-1-1) outshot the Hokies 13-6 and didn’t let Tech (4-1-1) come close to a goal in the waning minutes. ODU hadn’t beaten the Hokies since 1999 and hadn’t beaten a ranked foe since George Washington 27 years ago.
The Hokies’ Ellie Robertson scored 4:24 into the match. But about five minutes later, Mullen laced a shot into the net off a pass from Yuliia Khrystiuk. The eventual winning sequence came late in the first half as Edwards headed home a pass from Finja Kappmeier, who received a long Grace Hillis pass.
No. 8 UVA beats No. 9 Penn State
Maggie Cagle scored in the second minute to lift eighth-ranked Virginia over ninth-ranked Penn State 1-0 in Charlottesville. Passes by first-time starter Carrie Helfrich and Addison Halpern set up the goal for the Cavaliers (5-0-1) against the Nittany Lions (3-2-1).
UVA outshot Penn State 18-4.
Norfolk Academy grad honored for her CNU play
Christopher Newport freshman Addy Hennessy of Norfolk was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. She played all 180 minutes as CNU, ranked third in the Division III preseason poll, beat the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 3-0 and Saint Benedict 2-0.
The Norfolk Academy graduate assisted Alex Devers’ winning goal in the 24th minute against the Mariners, and the shutouts were the 66th and 67th in Jamie Gunderson’s CNU coaching tenure. Goalkeeper Amy Sidaway needed to make just two saves for the weekend for the Captains (2-0), who play host to Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 p.m. Friday.

She finished the 4-kilometer Spider Alumni Open in 14 minutes, 35.1 seconds at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, becoming the first CNU runner to break 15 minutes at that distance.
She was 27th overall and the fastest Division III runner in the field, breaking the personal record of 15:27.3 she set at last year’s Spider Alumni Open.
GOLF
ODU’s Ma wins 8-hole Portsmouth playoff
Old Dominion player Kaijun Ma of Macau, China, won an eight-hole playoff last weekend to win the Portsmouth City Amateur Championship at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course.
The senior shot 68-74 for a 2-under-par 142, tying Churchland High alum Jonathan McEwen of Washington and Lee, the 2025 NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year. They traded birdies on some of the playoff holes until McEwen’s double bogey enabled Ma to sink a bogey putt for the victory.
