ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Wild added a little more competition to their bottom six for training camp Friday morning, signing right wing Brett Leason to a professional tryout. The PTO comes a month after the team did the same with veteran defenseman Jack Johnson.

Leason, 26, has played 220 career NHL games, all with the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks, scoring 25 goals and 54 points. Sixteen of those goals came in 130 games with the Ducks over the past two seasons.

Listed at 6-foot-5, 218 pounds, Leason would also give Minnesota another penalty kill option. He saw a 37 percent PK deployment last year in Anaheim and 34 percent the year before, coming onto the ice mostly on the fly.

If Leason earns a contract, the Wild could sign the unsigned free agent to a two-way contract and perhaps start him with AHL Iowa, which is now coached by his former Ducks coach, Greg Cronin. He’ll be battling for a roster spot on the big club with a youngster like Liam Ohgren, as well as roster hopefuls Vinnie Hinostroza, Tyler Pitlick, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Ben Jones.

Players report for training camp Sept. 17 with on-ice sessions starting Sept. 18.
