REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has announced a closure of a section of the forest, including parts of the Pacific Crest Trail, due to fire activity on the Root Fire.
The Root Fire, which has burned more than 750 acres and is 50% contained, is burning in the area west of Castle Crags near the Shasta County and Siskiyou County line.
The closure, under Forest Order 14-25-25, is set to start on Saturday, September 6 and will continue through January 31, 2026. This action is aimed at ensuring the safety of the public and firefighters while crews work to fully contain the fire.
The United States Forest Service says the closure affects the area and roads within the Root Fire vicinity, as well as the Pacific Crest Trail between the Castle Crags Wilderness boundary and Forest Road 40N26. The closure order is in place to allow for necessary remediation and repair in the area.
Exemptions to the order include people with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 and members of official rescue or firefighting forces performing their duties.
Violating this order could result in a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
