Investors in the firm that dredged Kulahakoi Stream this year to reduce flooding in South Maui have started a green waste recycling company that plans to reduce the waste going to the Maui County landfill.
Brothers Pete and Dave Sullivan of PV Sullivan Inc. are the investors starting Hawaii Organics Compost located near Kuihelani and Honoapiilani highways mauka of the tiki-carving enterprise.
Hawaii Organics Manager Jenny Sullivan announced the opening of Hawaii Organics Compost this month with recycling for green waste and wooden pallets.
“This is a win-win solution for Maui residents, local businesses and the environment,” Jenny Sullivan said. “We’re committed to keeping green waste and wood pallets out of the landfill, turning them into landscape, agricultural and construction materials for the island.”

She said Hawaii Organics Compost plans to provide a cost-effective, environmentally responsible alternative to sending green waste and clean wood pallets to the landfill.
She added that, as Hawai’i moves toward the state mandate of 100% renewable electricity production by 2045, the Hawaii Organics facility will provide Maui with another means of resource independence while helping to support energy security, economic stability and environmental sustainability.
“The goal of HOC is to make products that are not only useful, but also helpful to our island,” she said. “We turn green waste into rich, sustainable soil products that help your garden thrive while keeping our islands clean and green. Whether you’re a home gardener, landscaper enthusiast or business, we make it easy to compost, grow and give back to the ‘āina.”
PV Sullivan already has Hawaii Materials Recycling, which recycles rock, concrete, asphalt, dirt and sand and converts some of it into topsoil.
Jenny Sullivan said Hawaii Organics Compost is offering recycled products along with eco-friendly delivery options for both residential and commercial customers.
“We’re hoping this will be well-received by the public,” she said. “We’re really excited.”

She said she’s looking forward to working with homeowners to develop compost for flowers and lawns, and Hawaii Organics Compost has developed an extensive screening system to prevent receiving and processing anything that contains hazardous or undesirable materials.
For this reason, Hawaii Organics Compost will only accept source-separated items. They will not accept mixed loads, she said.
Residents and businesses can drop off materials including tree trimmings, unpainted and untreated lumber and pallets, leaves and branches, logs and tree stumps, garden clippings, roots without soil or rocks, and sod at the facility.
Large container bins will also be available, which can be filled at residential and worksites. Company crews and partners will then pick them up and bring the materials to their facility.
Hawaii Organics Compost is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m on Saturdays. For more, go to hawaiiorganicscompost.com or call (808) 269-8064.
