Now that Carey Price’s contract is off the books, the Montreal Canadiens are free to chum the NHL trade waters for much bigger fish, and that’s exactly what they are doing. Pittsburgh Hockey Now delivered a couple of nuggets regarding the potential sale and path forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ rebuild. And former Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov claims to have narrowed his options to two.

I know this is the first Steelers Sunday of the year, and fans across Western Pennsylvania opened their eyes this morning with the thought of tailgates and high fives. Chants of “Meeeuuutthh” will ring out.

I have come around on the Steelers’ chances this season to be a solid second-tier team this season, though it would have been nice to see Aaron Rodgers throw a few passes in competition.

For those of you coming to the game, if you park in front of my house on the Northside, you’d better share what you’re bringing to the tailgate … or enjoy jelly on your door handles. Just remember, we do live here (Every year, there are a few people who forget their manners. The brick wall and the ivy on my house are nice enough without being watered, eh?)

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Rotowire did a study, and soft might be a good adjective to use. The study rated aggressiveness, but the twist was that the teams that tied with the Penguins were near the bottom.

And some inside nuggets on the sale and the path forward. In talking to lots of people over the last couple of weeks, we’ve learned what those on the inside expect to happen with the Penguins’ rebuild.

Steelers Now: Here we go Steelers. The game day essentials–depth charts, injuries, betting lines, TV info, and more for the Steelers game.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: The Pirates stunk last night. However, Quinn Priester is yet another former farmhand and Pirates castoff who is having success elsewhere. In fact, his win streak is impressive. John Perrotto has the scoop on the former Pirates pitcher.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Montreal Hockey Now: The cap space differential is enormous. Now that Carey Price’s contract is off the books, the cap space can accrue, and there’s a $16 million difference–here are the details and what comes next for the Montreal Canadiens.

Sports Daily (Russian): It’s down to two teams, claims Evgeny Kuznetsov’s agent. Of course, this is the same agent who was essentially caught telling tall tales early in the summer regarding Kuznetsov’s options. Make sure your browser’s translation is set to English, as here’s the story–apparently, two teams have made offers.

I’m a bit skeptical until I see him sign.

Montreal Hockey Now: The tributes and mourning are pouring in after Ken Dryden passed away at age 78. You can find the penned eulogies on all of the major Canadian outlets, but here’s the one Marc Dumont wrote–Ken Dryden was the best of all of us.

Sportsnet: Alex Formenton was acquitted of wrongdoing, but remains ineligible to play in the NHL following the acquittals of all five members of 2018 Team Canada accused of sexual assault. Rather than wait for the NHL, Formenton became the first to sign a contract and decided to return to his Swiss team.

Boston Hockey Now: Jeremy Swayman didn’t have a great last season after missing training camp due to a holdout. This year, Swayman is determined to be the difference maker for the Boston Bruins.
