MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Multiple water main breaks in Madison Township left the majority of the township without water Monday and forced the closure of Madison Local School District on Tuesday.
One break is in the 5900 block of Trenton Franklin Road, and the other is on Sandra Lee Lane, according to a Facebook post from the township. According to the Southwest Regional Water District Outage Map, the breaks also caused a boil advisory.
The lack of water service left many, like Middletown Elks Lodge leader Sarah DeBord, wondering what to do.
“We make our money on a weekly basis. We’re a nonprofit organization,” DeBord said while surrounded by empty chairs and an empty bar.
The lack of water service forced their closure on a day that she said would be packed with Monday Night Football fans, members excited about weekly drawings and customers looking to get dinner from The Hilltop Kitchen.
The boil advisory also canceled classes at all Madison Local School District schools on Tuesday. While the district halted classes, Butler Tech, a nearby technical school, said it still planned to have classes like normal and buses would still be picking students up at the high school, according to a post on Facebook.
Sarah Affrunti, the general manager of the Southwest Regional Water District, said Monday evening that crews were working to “restore services as quickly and safely as possible.”

Affrunti said the break on Sandra Lee Lane near April Circle had been repaired Monday evening, and services were restored. The other repair on Trenton Franklin Road is still underway, but barring any additional issues, should also be restored overnight Monday into Tuesday, per Madison Township Fire Chief Kent Hall.
If, for some reason, water services are disrupted for more than 24 hours, the water district would provide alternative water sources to customers, Affrunti said.
Those impacted by the advisory will need to boil their drinking water for one minute until the advisory expires Wednesday at 2:50 p.m. Affrunti said there is a 48-hour regulated period to allow for water samples to be collected and analyzed before the advisory is lifted by the Ohio EPA.
Both water mains that broke are decades old, Affrunti said. The system on Sandra Lee Lane was installed in 1973, while the Trenton Franklin Road system was placed in 1968.
She said the district has a Capital Improvement Plan for water main replacements, which includes between 6-9 miles per year. For 2025 so far, the district has replaced just over 6 miles, Affrunti said.
DeBord said she plans to have the Elks Lodge open for normal operating hours as soon as water is flowing again.
