Retirement isn’t for everyone. When Sir Michael Caine announced his retirement from film in 2023, he was 90 years old and had an extensive list of films and television series under his belt, including ‘The Man Who Would Be King,’ ‘Get Carter,’ ‘Alfie,’ and ‘Sleut.’ He is a two-time Oscar winner and has received multiple nominations. The idea that he would return to the cinema would be a golden opportunity, a role that would truly motivate him to return to the sets. And it seems that it will be to return to work with Vin Diesel.
According to Variety, ‘The Last Witch Hunter 2′ “is being fast-tracked through development at Lionsgate and Diesel’s production banner One Race Films.” Although it is still in the very early stages of development, the idea is for Diesel to return in his role as Kaulder, and alongside him, Caine will return as the 36th Dolan, although the agreement with the English actor has not been finalized.
A strange decision to come out of retirement
The original film, ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ which was a passion project for Vin Diesel based on his Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, received poor reviews from critics, earning a mere 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also struggled at the box office, grossing around $147 million worldwide against a budget of up to $90 million, making it a financial disappointment. However, in the years since its theatrical release, the film has found a new life on streaming services and home video, cultivating a dedicated fan base.
“‘The Last Witch Hunter’ has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement confirming the sequel’s development. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role.”
