Aryna Sabalenka’s 2025 season will not end without a Grand Slam title, having clinched the fourth of her career at the US Open.
Sabalenka overcame Amanda Anisimova in the final at Flushing Meadows to successfully defend her crown, becoming the first to do so in New York since Serena Williams in 2014.
The Belarusian is also now the third woman in the Open Era to clinch her first four major championships on hard court, following Naomi Osaka and Kim Clijsters.
With two runner-up finishes to her name in 2025, Sabalenka was close to recording her first season since 2022 without winning a Grand Slam.
Her mental strength saw her over the line, however, in what Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge has deemed the most crucial victory of her career.

“It was the most important win I think she has had,” said Woodbridge on ‘The Tennis Mini’.
“Because things could have easily started to get away from her next year with all of the chances.
“I think you could see that pour out of her after it all, even in the speech with her saying that people don’t know how hard I have worked to get to here. That is the truth and you can see that.
“I think that tournament win now allows her to go on. I think if she had lost, I don’t think she would have gone on in 2026 to achieve more.
“I think she would win one, maybe two next year as well, because her consistency of getting into the semis and the finals now is starting to equal those moments of a Serena.
“She is probably not going to get all those wins, but consistency is so important, particularly in the women’s game.”

Sabalenka was two wins away from equalling Iga Swiatek‘s Grand Slam tally during the 2025 WTA season.
At the Australian Open, she was denied a three-peat in the final after falling to Madison Keys, with the American claiming a maiden major trophy.
She then reached the last stage of Roland Garros for the first time in her career, where Coco Gauff got the better of her in three sets.

In what marked her third consecutive semifinal finish at Wimbledon, Sabalenka bowed out in the final four at the All England Club to Anisimova.
The world number one has now earned revenge against the American, however, claiming her 100th WTA victory in the US Open title bout.
