Bryan Mbeumo is enjoying life at Manchester United but believes his start at the club has been “tough.”
Mbeumo was signed from Brentford for £65million plus £6m in add-ons in the summer window. United pushed hard to sign Mbeumo and finally succeeded with a third bid for the forward.
The 26-year-old was signed in time to travel to the United States for pre-season. He scored his first competitive goal for the club in the defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup and he got off the mark in the Premier League against Burnley at Old Trafford before the international break.
Mbeumo’s performances have been strong and he’s made a pleasing start at Old Trafford, but Ruben Amorim was hoping for a better start to the campaign from his team.
“It’s been tough,” Mbeumo told club media. “I was expecting a lot from here because it’s a big club. It’s a big everything. I’m really happy with what happened to me here, the teammates, the staff, everyone in Carrington are lovely people.
“You really want to come in and work here every day, which is really good. When I first arrive somewhere, I don’t really know, I don’t like to be loud or show myself a lot [be outgoing].”
Mbeumo thrived working with Thomas Frank at Brentford and he believes his former manager shares something in common with Amorim.
“I think I’ve found some similarities because he always tries to do it in a fun way, and I think this is really important because it makes your life more enjoyable,” he said.
Casemiro was asked about Mbeumo and responded: “He gave us a lot of trouble at his previous team, Brentford. I hope he’ll continue to do the same work to other teams.
“We know how it is to play against him and I think he’s adapted. You can tell he’s a very good player. We had to fight very hard when we played against him. So, his quality now is no surprise for us.”
Mbeumo spoke to club media over a game of chess. He sometimes likes to play before matches adding: “I like using my brain to do things and chess is the perfect example.”
During his post-match press conference, Amorim praised Mbeumo’s contribution after missing a penalty against Grimsby. “It was impressive, the way he (Mbeumo) stretched the team, the quality he has in the first touch,” Amorim said.
“You can feel that we are a different team, because when we win the ball, we have one guy stretching the team. Last season we struggled a little bit with that.
“And then you can see the first minutes of the game. You can understand, you can compare this to Wednesday, and you can feel it. It’s not about playing well.
“The sound of the fans when we are pressing and winning balls and corners, and you sprint to get a corner, you sprint to get a throw in, it’s nothing to do with the tactical and technical aspects.
“So today, I just need to watch sometimes the first minutes to understand the mindset of the team.”
