As the Toronto Blue Jays enter the final push for a postseason spot and an AL East title, they’ll do so without Bo Bichette — at least for the next 10 days. Toronto’s star shortstop was placed on the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s opener against the Houston Astros with a left knee sprain.
Bichette crashed into New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells in Saturday’s contest at Yankee Stadium. After colliding with Wells’ shin pads, Bichette rolled onto his back and grabbed at his left shin before the game went into a lengthy rain delay. Though Bichette returned to the field after the delay and finished the contest, he was not in Toronto’s lineup on Sunday. His shin was cut, manger John Schneider said, and the team planed to reevaluate before Tuesday’s game.
Bichette has long been a September hero for the Jays. He owns a career .329 average and .916 OPS in the season’s final month and seemed set to repeat the late-season brilliance again this year. In five September contests this season, Bichette owned a .474 average with two homers and eight RBIs. Now, Toronto must navigate at least part of the playoff push without him.
Joey Loperifdo, an outfielder, was recalled to replace Bichette’s spot on the big league roster. Ernie Clement and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will likely fill in the shortstop position in Bichette’s absence.
