Sounds like Ed Sheeran might be making good on his threat to go country. He recently said he’s moving to the United States sometime soon.
“I’m just about to move to America,” he told the hosts of The 2 Johnnies Podcast on Sunday. “I feel like I might be the only person moving to America. I’m going on tour there for a while, and I have a family, so I can’t dip in and out. We’re going and settling there.”
Does this mean Sheeran is going to Nashville? Will he be moving to America on a permanent basis? We have the answers below.
Is Ed Sheeran Going Country?
As we reported back in April, Sheeran has been experimenting with country for some time. While he said he has written songs in the genre before, he has never released them.
“I have to do it properly, and once you transition to country, you can’t transition back,” he said. “Once you’re there, you’re there.”
Sheeran has also been considering living in Nashville for quite some time to immerse himself in the genre.
“Nashville is like my favorite city in the States,” he added. “It’s always been my end goal. I’m going to move to Nashville and transition to country, but I think you just have to do it properly. It’s a genre you have to really respect, and it’s not just a dip in and out.”
It sounds like he’s pretty serious about going country. While it’s worked for Beyoncé, we certainly don’t expect her to release another country record. It also worked for Post Malone, and he’s apparently sticking with it.
But Wait …Is Ed Sheeran Leaving the U.K. For Good?
News outlets took Sheeran’s comments as a sign that he was leaving England for good. That seems like a fair assessment, considering he said he’s “going and settling” here.
However, the “Shape of You” singer took to Instagram Stories to clarify his comments.
“Way easier to clear up stuff on here so here’s me setting the record straight, coz there’s deffo a narrative press are trying to push that people wanna move out of the UK for some reason,” he wrote. “I’m not moving, I’m going on tour with my family and relocating to the continent I’m touring on, don’t wanna commute from London to San Diego obvz.”
There you have it. While country music may be a permanent part of Sheeran’s future, his move to the United States won’t be. At least we have his new album, Play, coming out tomorrow.
