KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Cat enthusiasts in Kirksville have an opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of feline genetics this Saturday.

Dr. Leslie Lyons, a feline geneticist and professor of comparative medicine from the University of Missouri, will be presenting on topics such as why cats can have certain colors or are hairless, among other genetic traits.

The event is part of the 4-H Cat Project, a new initiative within the county’s 4-H clubs.

Wende Wagnor, the Cat Project leader and a professional cat groomer, told us that this presentation is part of the effort to connect children with potential careers, but is open to the whole community.

Wagnor also encourages attendees to watch the National Geographic documentary “Science of Cats,” which features Dr. Lyons in Egypt collecting DNA to pinpoint the origins of cats around the world, both wild and domestic.

Dr. Lyons will be speaking at the Holiday Inn Express in Kirksville on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Registration is appreciated, but not required. The event is free for all interested in attending.
