The Simpsons like to hike. The father and son, who split their time between homes in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and New Jersey, have reached all the high points of the lower forty-eight states. It was on a trip up Oklahoma’s highest point that Robert spotted something on his phone. “While I was on top of the mountain, I looked at my phone and I saw that there was a tri-point just a 1/2 a mile away. I said “What’s a tri-point? Found out that’s where three states come together. So, we found this marker from 1881. An oblisque that they drug out in the middle of the desert in 1881 and I was fascinated…I said how many of these tri points are there? Turns out to be 65.” the 61-year old told us.Tri-points are the exact spot where three different states meet. The Simpsons set out to do all thirty-eight U.S. Tri-points on dry land. They ended up doing all sixty-five, which includes twenty-seven on water. Some in big bodies of water, like Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and the Mississippi River.”We were never going to do the water tri points. Who can go out 40 miles in the middle of Lake Superior or 40 miles out in Lake Michigan. Or 135 miles on the Snake River. But you know, once we starting getting to the end…we were kind of committed and just wanted to finish.” Simpson added.By reaching all sixty-five in the United States, they became the first people ever to do it.
