BAILEY ISLAND, Maine (WGME) — Shark warning flags are now on display at Cedar Beach in Harpswell after multiple great white shark sightings off Midcoast Maine.
Two separate CBS13 viewers reported seeing a shark, about 12 feet long, in the same area off Bailey Island.
Kevin Griffin sent us a video he says was taken on Monday east of Bailey Island.
Another viewer reports seeing a shark chasing a seal in the same spot on the east side of Bailey Island around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
A National Geographic photographer reports he had run-in with a great white shark under water just four feet from him off the coast of Harpswell last week.
Out of an abundance of caution, Harpswell Marine Resources & Harbor Management says due to two documented great white shark sightings observed in 48 hours east of Bailey Island, shark notification flags are being displayed at Cedar Beach in Harpswell.
Beachgoers are still able to access the water. The notification system is in place for people to make informed decisions only.
About 5 years ago, Maine’s first and only deadly shark attack occurred in that same area.
If you observe a shark, if possible, please take a picture and contact the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center at 207-893-2810. This helps beach managers in Casco Bay take appropriate action at time of the sightings.
