Ruben Amorim has told Manchester United supporters that he is “suffering more than them” and will “give everything” to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Phil Foden’s opener and Erling Haaland’s brace consigned United to a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the 197th Manchester derby at the Etihad on Sunday.

United have lost two of their opening four Premier League games, having finished 15th last season under Amorim, who has taken just 31 points from his first 31 top-flight games in charge.

Amorim accepted that record will invite pressure and criticism, but believes that his side are improving compared to last season, and vowed to do all in his power to achieve better results.

When asked if he had a message for the supporters who might be losing faith, Amorim said: “My message is that I am going to give everything. I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. That was always the same message.

“It is not my decision, the rest. Until I am here, I will do my best. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them.”

Amorim has repeatedly insisted that he will not deviate from his favoured 3-4-2-1 system, which has seen players like captain Bruno Fernandes moved out of their natural position.

The United head coach again suggested on Sunday that the club’s hierarchy would need to sack him if they want to see a shift in tactical approach.

“I understand (the criticism) and I accept. It is not a record you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things.

“You have no idea what happened during these months but I accept that. I am not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.

“We talk about that every game that we lose. I don’t believe in that in the system or whatever. I believe in my way and I am going to play my way until I want to change.”

Four points after four games is United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1992-93, and already leaves them five points adrift of fourth-placed Bournemouth.
