It was a wildly exciting night of racing action on Advance Auto Parts Championship Night Saturday night at Grandview Speedway, and when the final checkered flag waved, the night featured a repeat feature winner, a first time ever winner, a repeat champion, and a first time ever champion, in a night that will be remembered for a long time to come!
Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa. made a late race charge in the 30-lap T.P. Trailer NASCAR Modified feature event securing the lead from Ryan Graver of Lehighton, Pa. on lap 28, then held off both Graver and his own son Logan Watt of Boyertown, Pa. in a wild and frantic final two laps to secure the feature victory, his second of this season, and his seventh career Saturday night NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series win (overall his 9th career 358 Modified Grandview win counting the Thunder on the Hill Series wins).
Mike Loney of Taylor, Pa., who just returned to racing at Grandview Speedway at the beginning of August, took the lead on lap ten from Stephen Smith III of Saucon Valley, Pa., then held off some late race charges from Parker Guldin of Temple, Pa. and Colin Cox of Perkasie, Pa. to score his first ever Grandview Speedway win in the 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman feature event.
The night’s action was also the final point racing event of the season, and it was a real nail biter in the T.P. Trailer Modified division, with four drivers having a mathematical shot at the title entering the final night, while the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman division saw Colin Cox already have his first ever championship locked up entering the night’s action.
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa. had a very conservative night, ending with a fourteenth place feature finish, but scored enough points to hold the point lead he had entering the night to secure his seventh career T.P. Trailer Modified point title at Grandview Speedway over Louden Reimert of Oley, Pa., who made a dramatic charge from seventeenth starting spot to fourth at the finish, but could not overcome the deficit to unseat Howard in the top spot.
The Outlaw Racing Series Vintage cars were also on hand, with Gage Phillips (Modified) and Sven Olson (Sportsman) taking the wins in their respective classes in the very busy evening of racing action.
The winners both received bonus money (Modified $300, Sportsman $200) from T.P. Trailers and Truck Equipment of Limerick, Pa., sponsors of the two divisions at Grandview Speedway in a race program run under the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series banner.
T.P. Trailer Modified winner Ryan Watt also received another bonus of $500 from Jimmy DiFulvio Construction, pushing his winner’s take to $3500 for the 30-lap Championship night main event feature win!
The 30-lap T.P. Trailer Modified feature was fast, furious and intense, with plenty of great side-by-side racing, passing, and the drama of the point championship at stake, with the main event only being slowed by one caution, and the whole feature being completed in just over eleven minutes!
Ryan Graver, who raced and won in the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman division this season, only moving into T.P. Trailer Modified action on August 16, grabbed the lead at the start of the main event, leaving Ray Swinehart of Perkiomenville, Pa., Mike Laise of Pottstown, Pa., and Matt Yoder of Benton, Pa. fighting for positions behind him.
While this was happening, Ryan Watt was on the move from his tenth starting position, reaching the top five by lap eight, as he was involved in a super six-car battle for third spot between Yoder, Laise, himself, John Willman of Birdsboro, Pa., Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville, Pa., and Logan Watt , who was moving up from thirteenth starting position.
Graver built up a full straightaway advantage over second place Swinehart by lap twelve, just as he reached lapped traffic for the first time, however the race’s only caution would wave on lap fourteen for Booby Trapper Jr. of Scranton, Pa. who broke and could not clear the track, resetting the field.
The restart saw Graver, Swinehart, Watt, Yoder and Willman as the top five, with Graver getting away cleanly on the green, leaving a great battle between Swinehart and Ryan Watt for many laps for position two, while Logan Watt was continuing to advance toward the front with some rim-riding outside moves.
Also on the move during this time were Louden Reimert, Mike Gular of Harleysville, Pa. and Jared Umbenhauer of Richland, Pa., who were all fighting to capture the point title, as they were battling to reach the top spots and beat each other and Duane Howard to the front of the pack, in hopes of a possible point championship.
Ryan Watt took over second from Swinehart on lap nineteen, with Logan Watt grabbing third on lap twenty-one, with the two of them setting sail after leader Graver who had once again built up a sizeable lead, with Swinehart, Willman, Reimert, Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., Umbenhauer, and Gular all fighting for the next several spots.
With six laps to go the Watts erased Graver’s lead, and the battle for the victory was on, with Ryan Watt trying the high lane, then the low lane, doing everything he could to get by the strong running leader, who was doing everything he could to maintain the top spot.
The three drivers were then running practically under a blanket in an awesome battle for the win, with lapped traffic coming into play in the final laps as well, making for some wild action.
Ryan Watt was finally able to make the pass on Graver to grab the lead with just two laps to go down the back stretch, with Logan Watt following, dropping Graver to third, setting up the father-son duel to the finish.
Ryan did everything he could to stay in front and Logan did everything he could to pass his Dad while fighting lapped traffic in the final frantic laps, but it was Ryan defeating Logan by a car length at the finish line for the thrilling feature win.
Ryan Watt scored his second win of the season at the checkered flag, followed by Logan Watt, Ryan Graver for his career best Modified finish, Reimert who did all he could to try and win the point title, Laubach, Willman, Umbenhauer, Gular, Swinehart, and Craig Von Dohren of Oley, Pa.
Qualifying heats for the 41 cars on hand were won by Jared Umbenhauer, Ray Swinehart, Ryan Graver and Logan Watt while Eddie Strada of Lake Ariel, Pa. and Duane Howard won the consolations.
Stephen Smith III took the lead at the start of the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman feature, with Mike Loney, Shannon Slaughter of Lititz, Pa., Parker Guldin, and Jimmy Leiby of Gilbertsville, Pa. all fighting for positions in the top five.
Loney caught Smith III and the two put on a clinic, racing side-by-side for seven laps for the lead, never touching, with Loney eventually taking the top spot with an outside move to score lap twelve, racing out of turn four.
With only a single caution slowing the race on lap four, action was intense the rest of the race, as many drivers were battling for positions throughout the field, including Slaughter, Guldin, Leiby, Brad Brightbill of Sinking Spring, Pa., Adrianna Delliponti of Norristown, Pa. and Colin Cox, who was moving forward after starting in fourteenth position.
Guldin grabbed second from Smith III on lap 18, followed by Cox taking third on lap 20, with the two drivers quickly closing in on leader Loney, who was reaching the back end of the field in the closing laps.
Loney held off all challenges in the final laps to score his first ever NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Grandview Speedway feature win, followed closely by Cox who picked up second on the final lap, Guldin, Leiby, Smith III for a season best run, Brightbill, Addison Meitzler of Kempton, Pa. who had a late charge for a top ten, Slaughter, Delliponti, and Mark Mohr of Gilbertsville, Pa.
Qualifying heats for the 48 cars on hand were won by Stephen Smith III, Mike Loney, Parker Guldin, Troy Conrad and Jimmy Leiby while Brad Force of Sellersville, Pa., Kenny Gilmore of Fleetwood, Pa. and Brayden Shelton of Hatfield, Pa. won the trio of consolations.
Gage Phillips started fifth in the Outlaw Racing Series Vintage feature and grabbed the lead off of turn four to score lap one, and was never headed in the 15-lap feature, scoring the win over Kevin Kuser, Rich Baker, Junior Mikosz, and Sven Olson. Olson was the highest finishing Sportsman division driver, coming from eleventh starting spot to score a fifth place feature result.
