The aurora borealis is influenced by activity around the sun, such as sunspots. Sunspots are areas of the sun’s surface that gets distributed by its magnetic field, allowing for the sun to eject particles into space. Sometimes these particles head towards Earth, and gets pulled closer by Earth’s magnetic field, eventually hitting the atmosphere.
This causes the particles to release energy, which allows for the sky to glow. The more particles that hit the Earth’ atmosphere, the brighter the northern lights will be.
