ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – At least two drivers in Orange County were arrested over the weekend after deputies say road rage incidents escalated to the point where firearms were pulled on other motorists.
On Friday, deputies responded to Dean Road and Winder Trail after a victim reported that a man brandished a handgun and threatened to kill him during a confrontation. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 37-year-old Gregory Anderson, who remains in the county jail.
Just two days later, deputies said they were called to 39th Street and Orange Blossom Trail after a man reported another driver pointed a gun at him while his wife and toddler were in the car. Deputies arrested 41-year-old Luel Joseph in that case.
Former Osceola County Sheriff Russ Gibson said drivers should assume others on the road may be armed.
“Firearms are so readily available and without thinking sometimes people’s tempers flare,” Gibson said. “They know it is there, and without instinct they can grab it. Meaning to or not they could fire a shot, kill somebody, and end up in an 8×8 cell.”
The recent arrests follow similar incidents earlier this summer. In June, deputies arrested 33-year-old Stevon Desouza after he allegedly threatened a family visiting near International Drive with a handgun. In July, 25-year-old Hailey Miller was arrested after another driver told deputies she pulled a gun during a road rage dispute on West Kelly Park Road.
Gibson said many people don’t consider the long-term consequences when acting in anger on the road.
“Once they lose their temper, they don’t think about the charges until they come later on,” Gibson said. “When you’re facing a felony offense, remorse comes too late.”
He advises drivers who feel threatened to avoid confrontation, pull into a public place and immediately call 911.
