September may be the bookiest month on the calendar, and there’s no mystery as to why: We’re in full back-to-school mode, and gathering the novels, texts, and tomes we need for class is at the forefront of our thoughts.
But hold up: A lot of us are well beyond our school years, even if we have the urge to buy a new lunchbox and pencil case as summer winds down.
Still, that doesn’t stop us from being in a bookish frame of mind and wanting to assist kids across the region as they connect with cool characters, fun plots, and the tales that help shape hearts and minds.
Big Sunday is ready to distribute books, a lot of books, as in thousands of books, to schools and charities across Southern California.
But the vibrant volunteer organization needs your help.
And to make it all the more merry, which is a hallmark of Big Sunday’s events?
There’s a big Books ‘N Brunch volunteer gathering, which will find people sorting and labeling books before they’re distributed to nonprofits around the region.
It’s happening Sept. 28 and you can sign up here.
There are actually a few ways to play an important role: You can donate “gently used” kids and young adult books to Big Sunday, you can be there in person for the Sept. 28 event, and you can buy 25 books for $25 (the price comes courtesy of a deal Big Sunday has with a bookseller).
Or, of course, you can commit to all three give-back paths if you can and would like to do so.
This is the same organization that creates handmade Valentine’s Day cards in February for people needing a little pick-me-up and holds a lively trick-or-treat party for underserved youth in late October.
In fact, Big Sunday always has something special, and heartwarming, on its calendar.
Sign up for Books ‘N Brunch or find another happening that helps connect you to the larger Los Angeles community in all of the good ways.
