Longtime bitter foes Washington and Washington State square off at 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS in another installment of the Apple Cup, extending one of college football’s oldest rivalry series in meeting No. 117. Conference realignment has yet to squash this tradition as the Huskies and Cougars agreed to a five-year scheduling deal after the former’s move to the Big Ten, and Washington State hosts this week the first on-campus installment in that subseries after taking the 2024 matchup in a 24-19 neutral-side thriller at Lumen Field in Seattle.
This is the final non-conference tune-up for the Huskies ahead of their looming date with No. 1 Ohio State. Jedd Fisch and his dazzling offense seek to remain unbeaten in advance of that Big Ten opener but have to do something they have yet to accomplish in his tenure in order to make that happen: win a game away from Husky Stadium. Both victories this season — comfortable triumphs over Colorado State and UC Davis — came at home.
On the home sideline, Washington State needs to refine some glaring deficiencies in order to defeat their rival from the western part of the state. The Cougars sustained their first loss of the year last week in a 59-10 drubbing at North Texas, raising questions about the program’s health under first-year coach Jimmy Rogers.
