Championship contender Denny Hamlin found himself locked in battle with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Ty Gibbs, who isn’t part of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, while fighting for track position during Sunday’s Mobil 1 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
“Does Ty know we’re going for a championship? What the —-?” Hamlin vented over his radio as Gibbs refused to yield position (per Jeff Gluck). “This is some teammate bull—-… Copy that.”
Hamlin found himself stuck in 12th place behind Gibbs – who has never won a Cup Series race – sitting in 11th. The 44-year-old grew increasingly aggravated that his JGR teammate wouldn’t allow him to pass. Ryan Blaney cruised to victory in the race. It comes after Hamlin shared a ‘weird feeling’ about a NASCAR rival in his Playoff prediction.

According to Gluck, Gibbs had a completely different attitude on his radio. “Game on,” he declared following the incident.
Gibbs then targeted the tow truck operator. “This is hilarious. I wish I could just spin this guy out and break myself away from this thing,” he quipped.
Gibbs managed to get back on track eventually, but a damaged toe link forced him back to pit road. He continues to run far outside the top five.
Prior to the incident, USA broadcaster Tyler Burton explained the circumstances: “Some frustration out of the veteran driver [Hamlin], hoping he may concede between him and [Christopher Bell, also in the pack].
“Racing for a championship, I’m on either side of this,” Burton added. “I think if we were inside the top five, I would side with Ty Gibbs and say, “Man, I’m racing! I’m out here racing as hard as I can. But I will admit for 11th and 12th.”

Hamlin, a serious contender for his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series title, entered the weekend with high hopes.
The 44-year-old holds the record for the most race wins without a season-long championship in the circuit’s history and is currently in his 20th season as a driver.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has already racked up five victories this season, including a recent win at Gateway Motorsports Park in the Cup Series playoffs just two weeks ago.
Speaking after the incident, Joe Gibbs said: “I think these guys are the ones driving the cars, and so those guys will get together on their own and figure it out.”
