Rochester, N.Y. – A new investment from local leaders will bring affordable high-speed internet to low-income households in the area.

Monroe County announced on Monday a partnership with Community Broadband Networks to help close the digital divide and connect more residents to essential online resources.

The initiative is funded by a $4.2 million investment from the American Rescue Plan Act.

“This is about breaking down barriers,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “It’s about the future of our community, where everyone has an opportunity to succeed. To do that, you have to have a reliable internet connection.”

The program covers business locations and eligible households located in the following zip codes:

Eligible households will have the opportunity to receive:

At least a 100 megabytes per second (Mbps) speed packageCurrently offering the first two months of service free upfront. Ongoing service for just $30 per month for five years.Free in-home installation and Wi-Fi router provided by CBN

Eligible households can qualify for this program if they meet at least one of the following criteria:

Residents who are eligible as low-income based on federal or local guidelinesResidents enrolled in Temporary Assistance and/or SNAP benefitsResidents who have children enrolled in Head Start and/or Early Head StartResidents who have children enrolled in the National School Lunch Program (NLSP) and/or School Breakfast Program (SBP)Residents enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC)Residents enrolled in a Section 8 housing voucher programResidents enrolled in the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)Residents enrolled in a Pell Grant program for collegeResidents who receive Supplemental Security IncomeResidents who received Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidies
