“Sparks” typically fly at a Coldplay concert, but during one of the band’s shows in Boston this week, frontman Chris Martin had quite the awkward moment.
On Wednesday, July 16, during the rock band’s second night at Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium during the Music of the Spheres world tour, Martin provided commentary as a concert camera panned to a couple embracing. What audiences expected to be a romantic moment, quickly turned into an uncomfortable situation that went viral.
After the pair realized they were on camera, as seen in a viral social media video, the woman spun to hide her face, and the man ducked down, seeming to gesture for the camera to move on. Another woman looked on with an uneasy smile.
“Come on, you’re OK!” Martin, 48, tries to tell the couple before quipping: “Uh oh. Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
The viral moment has inspired fan speculation and internet sleuthing about who the couple is and why they seemed so against being on camera.
Coldplay on tour
Chris Martin of Coldplay performs the first of two shows July 15 at Gillette Stadium.
Coldplay has been on the lengthy Music of the Spheres tour since 2022, and in that time has made a number of headlines, including in India when Martin thanked Mumbai fans for “forgiving us” over British colonialism, and in Australia, when Martin fell through a trap door on stage, though he didn’t get seriously hurt.
