The Indiana Men’s Basketball (IUBB) season unofficially gets underway in 40 days when the Hoosiers take on the Baylor Bears in an exhibition game in Indianapolis on October 26th. The exhibition season starts a few days earlier against Marian at Assembly Hall. Just like our football coverage, we are doing a countdown to tip-off. Today we take a look at junior walk-on Ian Stephens.
Name: Ian Stephens
Height/Weight: 6’5” / 180 lbs
Hometown/High School: New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine High School
Class: Junior
Position: Guard
Ian Stephens enters year three in the Cream and Crimson. This is a unique position, as Stephens represents one of the only players on the team to have played for the Woodson staff and now the Devries staff. No doubt, his experience going through both regimes can bring a bonding point in helping the newly transferred players understand what it means to be a Hoosier and what it’s like to play basketball in the state of Indiana.
Coming out of high school, Stephens signed on with the Hoosiers as a walk-on, thanking Jordan Hulls specifically in the process of his recruitment. During his time at New Palestine High School, he became a leader and was invaluable to their success on the court. His senior season, per iuhoosiers.com, Stephens earned three letters, averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal, shot 59% from the field, 40% from three, and won a sectional title with a record of 23-3. His strong success caught the eyes of IU recruiting staff where he subsequently joined the team for the 2023-2024 season as a freshman.
Thus far, Stephens saw game action against Nebraska in the 2024 Big Ten Tournament and also received Academic All-Big Ten honors during the 2024-2025 season. This season, Stephens will look to push the starters in practice with hard work, relentless effort, and that good old Indiana-kid passion for basketball. There is a chance he sees game action this season in large point differential games, so be on the lookout for him.
The Hoosiers are set to open the regular season at Assembly Hall on November 5th against Alabama A&M. Stay locked in with Hoosiers Huddle for all things Indiana Basketball, Indiana Football, and all other Indiana sports – all the time.
