Brandon Duhaime loves being a part of the Washington Capitals organization, and those feelings came out in spades during a radio interview with “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday.

Not only did Duhaime see on-ice success after setting a a career high in points (21 points in 82 games) during the 2024-25 season, but he also quickly assimilated into the group with his chirping, pranking, and dog-like tendencies.

“This locker room is fun to come in because you don’t know what you’re walking into each day,” Duhaime said. “It could be guys are just eating breakfast and hanging out or guys could be in the locker room tying your skates in a knot or, you really don’t know what you’re going to get walking in here, it’s a pretty reckless group.”

As he enters his second season as a Capital, Duhaime is looking to build on his success from last year and create more memories with his teammates. During the interview he revealed additional details about his personal quirks and experiences with the guys.

Lineup Card eating origin

The 28-year-old winger added to the Capitals’ unique locker room environment last year with some of his own outlandish antics like eating the lineup card ahead of games.

“I actually don’t know when it started, it might’ve been my first year pro maybe,” Duhaime tried to recall. “I always ate the card when it was a big game, I just got excited one time and ate the thing, I don’t know.”

The team actually started the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs with two consecutive victories when Duhaime devoured the list of the night’s starters.

Caps’ best chirper

Duhaime was voted by his teammates to be the best chirper in the locker room, a title he said he “wasn’t quite expecting” but conceded was “pretty accurate.”

Though, he added anything Wilson had to say on the matter was moot. The right winger claimed in a Capitals’ social video during media day that he’s a frequent target of Duhaime’s abuse.

“I don’t even want to hear it, he’s just playing victim, he’s always giving it out,” Duhaime said of Wilson’s jest complaints on Wednesday. “He’s just playing a little bit victim there.”

Thoughts on His Teammates

Duhaime had nothing but kind words for guys among the Capitals’ brotherhood like Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Jakob Chychrun and Ryan Leonard.

“[Ovi’s] been doing it for 25 years or whatever, he’s kind of seen it all,” he said of the Capitals captain. “For him to bring the same energy [every year] is – at least from what I’ve heard in his young years to now – is pretty incredible.”

He said that despite his childhood nickname of “Dewey” being popular among the team, what he’s called each day is actually up to Ovechkin. He’s previously been called “Doggy” by the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.

“That really depends on the day honestly. Depends on how [Ovechkin’s] feeling,” he joked. “[My parents] started calling me Dewey at a young age so that’s kind of stuck since then.”

Duhaime’s not the only one with multiple identities in the locker room. He spoke about Wilson’s dual personalities on and off the ice.

“[He has] two different characters for sure. Off the ice you see the nice, charismatic guy and on the ice you definitely see a different part of him,” Duhaime said. “It’s nice to be on the right side of him.”

He was also asked about Chychrun’s eccentric lifestyle habits. He admitted that despite some not being his style – specifically the defenseman’s preference for natural light in his home – he’s actually picked up a few good tips.

“I think it’s definitely eye-opening some of the stuff he does, but yeah I picked up a few things from him, whether it’s eating organic or grass fed or whatever,” Duhaime explained. “Just taking the health [seriously] but not any of the extreme stuff like lighting or all that, I think that’s a little bit much for me. Maybe one day I’ll get into it… Maybe that’s the trick.”

Duhaime has a lot of love for Leonard, the Capitals first-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, and sees promise in the 20 year old this season.

“I think he’s set up for success this year and the work that he put in over the summer. We stayed in touch a ton, he was grinding all summer working on his game, working on his craft,” Duhaime praised. “His work ethic is special, his mindset, his confidence. He’s awesome, I think we’re going to see an incredible Ryan Leonard.”

The rookie isn’t immune from the brotherly admonishments either. Duhaime added Leonard hears it consistently from the guys about his shacking up with centerman Pierre-Luc Dubois.

“He’s getting chirps there’s no question. Every day he comes in with something, one day it might be walking in to Dubie’s place and he’s eating popcorn on the couch, crumbs everywhere,” Duhaime joked. “Dirty dishes in the sink, he’s out of control. Living at a frat house at [Boston College], it’s a little bit of an adjustment.”
