In the British royal family, there’s a concept known as “an heir and a spare,” which essentially means that the firstborn is the heir to the throne, while the spares are, well, spares. Prince William was the heir, and Prince Harry was the spare. Now, with the next generation, William’s son, Prince George, is the heir, while his two younger kids, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are the spares. And one royal expert thinks the “burden” of being spares will do this for Charlotte and Louis’ bond.

Speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR, royal biographer Christopher Andersen said that since Charlotte and Louis are the “spares,” they’ll probably bond more throughout life.

“They pretty much lavish equal attention on all three, while at the same time nurturing their distinct and different personalities,” he said. “[T]he good thing is that Charlotte and Louis can share the burden [as spares], if one wishes to call it that.”

For those who don’t know, William and Kate have been together on and off since 2003. Since their nuptials in 2011, they have welcomed three children named Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7.

So it seems Charlotte and Louis are a lot like their uncle Harry. In fact, Charlotte has been compared to Harry. Back in 2023, royal expert Jennie Bond asserts, per Woman and Home, that Charlotte might not want to be “burdened” with more titles (which many noted is a lot like Harry.) Bond said, “I think we will be in a very modern era when the time comes. I question whether Charlotte will want to be burdened with more titles. She might be a working woman by then. Things could change so much in the next generation.”
