Typically, saving baby owls isn’t a job responsibility for FedEx drivers, but that didn’t stop driver Justin Beiler from saving one’s life anyway.

Beiler, of Akron Borough, was delivering packages in the Denver area July 10 when he saw an injured baby owl in the middle of the road.

“I knew I had to help him,” Beiler says in an email with LNP | LancasterOnline.

Beiler says he placed the owlet on one of FedEx’s padded envelopes and called Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, based in Washington Boro. The nonprofit helps to rehabilitate birds of prey and mammals like coyotes, foxes, raccoons and more.

When he didn’t hear back, Beiler says he made sure “the owl was off the road, out of danger, so I could come back after my route and pick him up.”

And, that’s what he did.

FedEx driver Justin Beiler, of Akron Borough, spotted a baby screech owl in the middle of the road while on his shift. He moved it to the side of the road and transported it after his shift to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro.

After his shift, Beiler took the owl to the wildlife center, where they took it in.

Wildlife rehabilitator Tracie Young, with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, says that the owl, which is a baby screech owl, is recovering alongside some of the other screech owls at the rehabilitation center.

“We will care for it for several weeks, and if it is in good shape, the owl will be released with the others,” Young says.

Raven Ridge commended Beiler in a Facebook post, saying, “We cannot express our gratitude enough for Justin’s extraordinary commitment to rescuing and transporting this vulnerable creature to our care.”

Beiler, who describes himself as an outdoor and wildlife enthusiast, says that “It wasn’t even really a thought. I knew I had to get him help and couldn’t just leave him in the middle of the road struggling.”
