An online video gave Fairbanksan Amanda Huff an idea to try something new here in Fairbanks.

The video showed a woman reading a book in a crowded coffee shop. Another reader asked to share her table and then sat down, and pulled out her own book. They each quietly read their own books, at the same table.

Soon, a third stranger joined them. She pulled out her own book.

It wasn’t long before more and more readers joined the quiet group.

It soon became apparent that those same readers showed up every week, at the same time. They all quietly enjoyed reading their own books. Word spread and the group just kept getting bigger.

Huff decided to give that concept a try and launched The Silent Book Club. Anyone can check it out from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at the 8 Star Events Center, 1485 30th Ave.

Huff said it’s a way to enjoy your favorite book and meet fellow book lovers in a cozy, low-key environment. Come anytime between 5:30-6 p.m., grab a snack, say “hi,” or just settle in. Read quietly from 6-7 p.m. Optional social time 7-7:30 p.m. to discuss what you are reading. Or not.

“All readers welcome. No pressure, no required discussion, just good vibes and quiet company,” according to the Facebook post.
