Bear cub runs through southern Arizona grocery store

  • September 29, 2025

ORO VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — A bear-y unusual encounter was caught on camera in an Oro Valley grocery store on Monday.

In the video, you can see a bear cub dash through the aisle of a Fry’s Grocery store on First Avenue and Oracle Road. Police say the bear made a couple of quick laps and then ran out. No one was hurt.

Oro Valley police told Arizona’s Family sister station, KOLD 13News, that this was not their first incident involving a bear in the past week. On Friday, Painted Sky Elementary School was asked to shelter in place after a bear was sighted nearby.

Witnesses told 13News that the bear came out of the wash and was on the sidewalk. Neighbors say that while wildlife isn’t uncommon in the area, they’ve never seen bears.

Arizona Game and Fish said it’s been a busy year for bears in southern Arizona. They said they’re monitoring several in the Oro Valley and Tucson area, which often come down the mountain looking for food.

State officials say the best thing to do when encountering a bear is to scare it away with loud noises and get away as quickly and safely as possible.

Police could not confirm if it was the same bear in both incidents.
