Big matchups between contenders continue to dictate Super Bowl odds early this NFL season.
The Kansas City Chiefs rolling past the Baltimore Ravens established some notable changes across BetMGM’s Super Bowl odds after Week 4. Contenders saw big changes with the Chiefs steadily climbing up the odds while dropping Baltimore’s odds in the process. At the top of the pack, the unbeaten Buffalo Bills are also beginning to create separation.
Teams in the middle are also seeing dramatic shifts. And with so many middling teams battling during Week 5, new contenders could develop.
Buffalo builds sizable lead
Buffalo (+375) owns a comfortable lead in the latest Super Bowl odds after moving to 4-0. Benefiting from the AFC’s elite teams beating up on each other, the Bills are the conference’s only unbeaten team.
Concerns still exist for Buffalo despite its hot start and lackluster remaining schedule. The Bills are 30th in rushing yards allowed per play. A lowly New Orleans offense entered Buffalo territory during its first nine possessions on Sunday. The Bills, at times, struggled to put away one of the NFL’s worst teams at home.
But with quarterback Josh Allen once again playing at an MVP level, it’s easy to see why Buffalo maintains its early lead in the Super Bowl market. James Cook’s emergence as one of the league’s most reliable running backs gives the Bills a dynamic offense capable of winning any game.
As long as Buffalo stays healthy and fixes its inconsistent run defense, it could stay atop the Super Bowl odds for many weeks to come.
Kansas City’s win shrinks the second tier
Major shakeups happened among second-tier contenders this week. Many of those changes stemmed from Kansas City’s impressive home win over Baltimore.
The Chiefs are back up to +950 (fifth in odds) after dropping to +1400 (sixth in odds) after Week 2. Slowly rising closer to its preseason number (+750), Kansas City looks dangerous as the roster gets healthy and Patrick Mahomes establishes a rhythm.
Thanks to its 1-3 start, Baltimore (+1300) dropped from second to sixth in the odds after the loss to the Chiefs. Injuries decimated the Ravens in the loss to Kansas City. Baltimore’s defense was down seven starters by the start of the fourth quarter. Lamar Jackson also exited the contest with a hamstring injury. The former MVP could reportedly miss Week 5.
Only five teams have started the season 1-3 and made the postseason during the 14-team playoff era. So Baltimore needs to quickly get healthy and start winning games before the season slips away.
The Philadelphia Eagles (+650) are back up to their preseason odds as the NFC’s only undefeated team. Despite an offense that is 30th in total yards and yards per play, the Eagles already own credible wins over the Chiefs, Rams and Buccaneers.
If Philadelphia’s struggling passing game (31st in passing yards per game) gets going, its odds could elevate even higher and push Buffalo for the top spot.
Another puzzling result dipped the Green Bay Packers to +750, good for third in the odds. Flying high after its 2-0 start, Green Bay’s loss to Cleveland and tie with Dallas cast concerns about consistency. The Packers benefit from an early bye during Week 5 and get the spiraling Cincinnati Bengals at home in two weeks.
The Detroit Lions (+800) are now above their preseason odds (+850) in the midst of a three-game winning streak. After Week 1’s road loss in Green Bay, the Lions plummeted to +1700 — only to steadily climb back up the odds board. Now the leaders in the NFC North, the Lions face a daunting upcoming stretch. After Week 5’s matchup against the Bengals, the Lions face five consecutive postseason teams from last season — with three of those matchups coming in prime time.
Gap grows after top six
The gap between second-tier contenders and the rest of the league continues to grow after Week 4. Kansas City and Detroit both recovered from early-season defeats while shifting away from the middle of the pack.
Losses and injuries impact the next set of teams. The Los Angeles Chargers (+1600) lost unexpectedly to the New York Giants in rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s debut. Week 4 also saw defeats for the San Francisco 49ers (+2500), Washington Commanders (+2500) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3000) — all of whom dropped as a result.
Week 5 offers a handful of matchups that spotlight teams in the middle of the Super Bowl odds. Thursday night opens the week with the Los Angeles Rams (+1600) hosting San Francisco in a critical game for the deep NFC West.
The Chargers will host the Commanders, who hope to have a healthy Jayden Daniels back under center. Two 3-1 teams will also play when the Seattle Seahawks (+4000) host Tampa Bay.
Facing defending champion Philadelphia on the road gives the Denver Broncos (+3000) a chance to earn an early signature win. Denver’s odds have fluctuated this season, rising from +4000 after Monday night’s dominant win over Cincinnati.
Cutting their odds in half since the preseason market opened, the Jacksonville Jaguars (+5000) are a new team to track after a road win at San Francisco. Monday night offers Jacksonville a chance to rise even more when it hosts Kansas City.
