Manchester United have regretted decisions to sell several players over the past few years, but one departure already looks like excellent value by Ineos.

In recent memory, there have been some painful sales sanctioned by Manchester United, including players who have come through the academy ranks.

Scott McTominay is a prime example of this, being sold by Ineos for profit, only to then go and buy Manuel Ugarte. After one year playing for Napoli, McTominay was nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

There has been a similar level of regret in the form of Alvaro Fernandez since United sold him to Benfica for £5m in 2024. In the summer 2025 transfer window, Fernandez was snapped up by Real Madrid and has been shining ever since.

To a lesser extent, United will rue the decision to sell Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace, considering the goalkeeping struggles.

But one recent big-name academy sale won’t be regretted by the club.

Summer 2025 saw United part with Alejandro Garnacho after his relationship with Ruben Amorim became untenable.

United managed to pocket £40m for Garnacho, which is below the initial £60m price tag, but many think it would end up excellent value, and it has.

Having had a slow start in blue, now Oliver Holt, chief sports writer of the Daily Mail, has tweeted, slamming the 21-year-old.

“Can’t help thinking Garnacho’s a bad signing for Chelsea. Kind of player and personality who gets managers the sack.”

Garnacho has been blasted for his attitude throughout his career, and any kind of problems will come as no surprise to United fans who saw him make himself a problem at Old Trafford.

How has Alejandro Garnacho played for Chelsea so far?

During the summer, Garnacho rejected Bayern Munich for Chelsea, but this decision looks bizarre right now as the Argentine has been nothing more than rotational for the Blues.

Since joining, Garnacho has played just 11 minutes of Premier League football. This included Garnacho being left on the bench at Old Trafford, while fans didn’t give him a kind reception.

Garnacho has yet to score or assist, looking the exact same player who drove United fans crazy last season.

Making things worse, Enzo Maresca has told Garnacho he is behind in the rankings, among other wingers at Chelsea, which makes his move look ill-judged.

Garnacho struggled again this week, and right now, United will be laughing all the way to the bank with that £40m.
