The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham to deliver new books to students at Brookville Elementary as part of the “Books Not Bullets” program. This initiative, aimed at promoting reading within Jefferson County Schools, underscores the importance of literacy and community engagement.

Sheriff Mark Pettway emphasized the significance of maintaining connections with youth, stating, “It is imperative that we stay connected to our youth because those relationships are vital to the success of Jefferson County.” He added that reading together helps children appreciate the value and joy found in books.

Honora Gathings, executive director of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting, “Supporting education is one of our top priorities each year and we are excited to partner with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to deliver new books to the students at Brighton Elementary.” She highlighted the impact of “International Read To Me Day,” which celebrates the power of reading aloud and its role in unlocking children’s imagination and learning potential.
