UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

A 50-year-old man, who was armed with a firearm and had four prior criminal convictions, was killed this morning shortly after a confrontation with two Honolulu police officers, according to Interim HPD Chief Rade Vanic at a press conference this afternoon.

Honolulu police received a 911 call after 10:15 a.m. today about a man who was expressing suicidal thoughts near The Queen’s Medical Center, Vanic said. Police found the man standing on the sidewalk of Punchbowl Street.

At 10:20 a.m., the man allegedly reached into his waistband for a firearm and pointed the gun at police officers. Officers fired shots and detained the man then took him to Queen’s, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Vanic reported the man had four criminal convictions, including one felony conviction for assault on a law enforcement officer. His identity was not immediately released.

No officers were injured at the scene.

Two HPD officers who discharged their firearms each have five years of service and have been offered administrative leave as is standard procedure, Vanic said.

12:15 p.m.

One man is dead after he was fatally shot during a confrontation with a Honolulu police officer near Punchbowl and Beretania streets, according to HPD.

The police officer was not injured, and the mauka-bound lanes of Punchbowl Street in front of The Queen’s Medical Center remain closed following the fatal shooting.

A news conference will be held by HPD at 4:30 p.m. today.

10:50 a.m.

Honolulu police have closed Punchbowl Street to investigate an officer-involved shooting, according to HPD.

“Active police investigation regarding an officer-involved shooting on Punchbowl St. and Beretania St.,” police said in a social media post. “No threat to the public.”

HPD is asking the public to avoid the area and keep roads clear for first responders.

EARLIER COVERAGE

Punchbowl Street was shut down in both directions between Vineyard Boulevard and South Beretania Street this morning for a police investigation, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The closure was announced in an HNL Alert at 10:34 a.m. and affects the downtown corridor that runs past the state Capitol and key government offices. Police urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.

No additional details were immediately available on the nature of the investigation.
