Around 1:45 am, Belgian military personnel detected 15 drones flying over the Elsenborn training base in eastern Liège Province, near the German border, according to Belgian news broadcaster VRT on October 3.
The incident was confirmed by the office of Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken, who said an investigation has been launched.

The drones were spotted by chance during tests of a drone-detection system at the 28-square-kilometer army camp, which is used for training exercises, including live-fire drills.
According to defense expert Jens Franssen on VRT, “Coincidentally, there was also a Belgian test aircraft there to observe drones, and that setup also observed the 15 drones. They came from over our military domain in Elsenborn and flew into German airspace. There, police in the small town of Düren also saw them.”

German authorities reportedly alerted Belgian defense officials, though local media noted the information may not have been fully passed through internal military channels.
The origin of the drones and who was operating them remains unknown. The Belgian military is continuing its investigation.
Franssen described the episode as “a very bizarre incident,” noting that “at the Elsenborn base, there isn’t much to ‘spy on.’ The Kleine-Brogel air base, where American nuclear weapons are stored, would be a far more obvious target.”

He added that the case underscores the urgent need for reliable systems to detect, track, and identify small drones.
Elsenborn is considered a NATO training facility and is situated only a few kilometers from Germany. While drone testing occasionally takes place there, officials say Friday’s sightings were not part of any planned military activity.
Earlier, drone sightings forced Germany’s Munich Airport to shut down flight operations late Thursday night, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers and diverting flights across the region.
