Kyle Busch will work with Andy Street for the final five races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, and it’s to be determined what happens to the crew chief position at season’s end.
“I think right now there has to be a greater plan with Richard [Childress] and [Mike] Verlander,” Busch said Saturday of the team executives. “So, we’re relying on those guys to make some good educated decisions and calls on what they want to do, and how they want to see this structured. It’s their race team, not mine, but I want to, obviously, be a part of a winning team, and we’re working toward that.”
Childress moved Randall Burnett off of Busch’s No. 8 team this week. Burnett is headed to Trackhouse Racing next season to work with rookie Connor Zilisch.
Burnett and Busch were paired together in 2023 when Busch joined the organization. The duo won three races together in their first season, but have been winless since. In 2024 and 2025, they failed to make the postseason. Busch had nothing negative to say about Burnett and their relationships, but admitted that “things change” when it comes to the working partnership and effort.
Currently Busch sits 21st in the Cup Series championship standings entering Sunday’s race at the Charlotte Roval. The two-time series champion has never finished a season with a single-digit number of top-10 finishes, but Busch has earned eight to date.
“Obviously,” said Busch about whether a change was needed on the team. “We’re not getting the results, and results are what matter. We’re in a performance-based business, and not getting the results, so it’s got to fall back on someone. They resigned me for another year, so that kind of gave me the notion that they have my back and we needed to find a change somewhere.”
Childress picked up the option on Busch’s contract for the 2026 season. It will be his fourth with the organization.
Busch will have input into who he works with going forward, but it will come in due time.
“It’s not that I don’t want any input or have conversations,” he said. “It’s that they have to put together their lists, and time is of the essence because people are probably getting their deals done right now in order to get ready for next year. Once that’s together, you go over that and say yay or nay to the list.”
