A popular cartoon character returns to NASCAR this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. SpongeBob Squarepants will take over an Xfinity Series car while promoting an upcoming movie.
According to a Monday reveal, the No. 24 Toyota GR Supra of Sam Hunt Racing will feature a yellow scheme for Saturday’s Xfinity Series race (7:30 p.m. ET).
This car has SpongeBob’s face on the hood. It also has SpongeBob and Patrick Star in pirate regalia on the bumper area. Gary the Snail also appears on the car while showcasing a pirate bandana and earring.

Olipop will serve as the co-primary sponsor along with “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants,” which releases in December.
Why does this car have a pirate theme? This ties into the film’s plot. According to the synopsis, the yellow protagonist will travel to “the underworld” to face off with the Flying Dutchman’s ghost (Mark Hamill). Patrick will join SpongeBob for this adventure.
The driver for this race will be Trevor Bayne, the former Daytona 500 champion who has made six Xfinity Series starts at the Nevada track. He has posted six top-eight finishes and four top-five finishes.
Bayne will return to the secondary series for this one-off start with Sam Hunt Racing, and he will become teammates with full-time driver Dean Thompson.
“It’s always exciting to bring in an experienced driver that has competed at the Cup level,” team owner Sam Hunt said in September. “Trevor not only understands where we are as a team; but wants to be a part of our team’s growth process.
“He’s a great guy and will be a great teammate for Dean (Thompson) to lean on. We are all excited to get on track together.”
This is not the first time the cartoon character has crossed paths with NASCAR. A 2015 Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway featured SpongeBob as the title sponsor.

Jimmie Johnson won. Ben Kennedy, Greg Biffle, David Ragan, Casey Mears, Michael McDowell, and Ty Dillon also showcased schemes featuring characters from the long-running cartoon.
The crossovers continue with a Busch Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2003. Johnson ran a scheme featuring characters from the film as he finished third.
