The 2025 Japan Open will see several top ATP stars travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to compete at one of the biggest annual tennis tournaments in Asia, which is held from September 24-30, 2025.

An ATP 500 event, the Japan Open is the longest-running ATP Tour tournament in Asia. The inaugural edition took place in 1972, and the tournament has since produced a variety of champions including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Hometown hero Kei Nishikori delighted local fans when he won the title in 2012 and 2014. The former World No.4 has been granted a wild card entry to the event, and Nishikori is sure to garner tremendous spectator support whenever he takes to the court.

Reigning Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed at the event. The Spaniard opted to compete at the China Open last year, which is held simultaneously. However, Alcaraz announced his intentions to compete in Tokyo this year, and will be present to thrill the crowd with his unique brand of tennis.Former champions join the fieldAmerican star Ben Shelton won his maiden ATP title at the 2023 edition, and the Atlanta native will not return as he has since withdrawn. But Taylor Fritz, who prevailed in Tokyo in 2022 also leads.

Frances Tiafoe, Brandon Nakashima and Alex Michelsen will also represent the United States at the event. Canadian Denis Shapovalov is sure to ignite the crowd with his passionate play, with compatriot Gabriel Diallo also scheduled to compete in Tokyo.

Czech stars Jiri Lehecka and Tomas Machac will be participating at the Tokyo event, alongside Danish star Holger Rune and Norwegian Casper Ruud. Below is the list of entrants.

Predictions

Samuel Gill, Head Editor of TennisUpToDate.com sees Carlos Alcaraz as continuing his form.

Carlos Alcaraz in my mind will continue his form here. He will be joined by a tough field but once you get past certain names, he is the best there.

Taylor Fritz I expect to have a good week. While it’ll be interesting to see how Casper Ruud does given that he has just announced he’s set to become a dad.

Father time either changes a player for better or for worse and it could free him up to play the game he wants to. So that’ll be interesting. Overall I’m mostly picking those from Laver Cup to thrive.
