The Wizards and Johnson will take on the Toronto Raptors at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 at home. No announcement has been made on his status for the game, but barring unforeseen injury, the former Wildcat will likely take the floor.

Johnson was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft in Brooklyn. The former Lake Highlands High School standout impressed in two NBA Summer League games, scoring 18 and 21 points before his run was cut short by a hamstring injury.

At 6”5, Johnson is widely considered to be an explosive offensive talent entering the league, a surprise to no one who followed him at Texas and Lake Highlands. While some have questioned his defensive ability, Johnson was recently lauded by teammate C.J. McCollum for his work ethic (apparently, coaches are having difficulty getting him out of the gym).

He was drafted out of Texas, where he set a freshman single-game scoring record and led the SEC in scoring. He finished as SEC Rookie of the Year with All-SEC honors in one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball history.

Before NIL deals and pro contracts, Johnson led the Wildcats to a State Championship in 2023. Following the season, he transferred to Link Academy in Missouri.

“His game is really well suited for the league,” Johnson’s former coach Joe Duffield told the Advocate in June. “ I’m excited to see him just play against the best players in the world and continue to improve and stay committed to the game and the craft. Also, just for the rest of the world to see not just the player he is, but the person he is.”
