The mystery around Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer’s status for Saturday got a little clearer on Thursday night.

Mateer, recovering from a broken hand that required surgery, has been updated to “probable” for the Red River Rivalry game against Texas, according to Thursday’s official SEC injury report.

According to a Thursday report from ESPN’s Peter Thamel, Mateer’s pain level and grip on the ball are the two biggest variables for him taking the field on Saturday.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables hasn’t shed much light on the situation in the week leading up to the battle with the Longhorns, reiterating that he’s just following along with what the OU training staff is telling him.

If Mateer can’t play, it’ll be Frisco Emerson product Michael Hawkins Jr. behind center for the Sooners, Hawkins coming off a four-touchdown performance in a win over Kent State last Saturday.

The Sooners enter the Cotton Bowl ranked as the No. 6 team in the AP Poll.
