There have been some big moments this year where players have been unable to convert match points.

None have been bigger than the Roland Garros final, where Carlos Alcaraz saved three match points to beat Jannik Sinner and win the title.

More recently, former US Open champion Emma Raducanu has failed to convert match points in two recent losses over the Asian swing.

There has now been another case of this at a lower-level tournament, where a former top 10 player was stunned by a much lower-ranked player.

Pablo Carreno Busta has been ranked as high as world number 10 and has won seven ATP Tour titles, including the Masters 1000 tournament in Canada.

However, it has been more of a struggle for the Spaniard in recent years after struggling with an elbow injury that he had to undergo surgery on.

This caused Carreno Busta to fall outside the top 1000 in the ATP rankings last year, but since then he has steadily been making his way back up.

On his rise back up the rankings, Carreno Busta has won three ATP Challenger tournaments, with the most recent coming last week in Villena, Spain.

In an attempt to continue this momentum, the 34-year-old then travelled to France for another Challenger in Roanne.

This is where Carreno Busta would play world number 363 and lucky loser Milos Karol, but the match did not play out as many would expect.

Carreno Busta won the first set in a closely fought tie-break and appeared to be on track for another win, before Karol levelled the match at one set apiece.

However, Carreno Busta would then regain control in the decider when leading 5-2, before Karol made another fightback and forced a tie-break.

Carreno Busta would have two match points in this tie-break, which he was unable to convert, and was subsequently beaten 6(8)-7 7-5 7-6(7).

Will Pablo Carreno Busta gain direct entry into the Australian Open?

Despite his disappointing defeat in Roanne, Carreno Busta is still projected to return to the top 100 in the next update of the ATP rankings.

This could be vital for Carreno Busta, who no longer has a protected ranking, and will be hoping to get into the Australian Open next year.

There are 104 direct entry places available for Grand Slam main draws, but with protected rankings being used that means that you are not necessarily guaranteed a spot if you are around the 104 area.

The good thing for Carreno Busta, who has never won a match at Wimbledon, is that after this week he only has six points to defend until the end of the season, giving him a good chance to gain direct entry to the first Grand Slam of 2026.

Carreno Busta is scheduled to play another ATP Challenger tournament next week in Olbia, Italy, where he will look to put this disappointment behind him and focus on the task at hand.
