‘Benny’s Big Heart: A Therapy Dog Spreads Kindness,’ a children’s book by Bowling Green author Susan Montgomery, won an International Firebird Book Award in the Children Animals/Pets category.
The award-winning book tells the story of the beloved community superstar Benny George (B.G.), the therapy dog, and his travels throughout Bowling Green.
The International Firebird Book Awards honor outstanding authors and publishers from around the globe. Entries pour in from a diverse range of genres and voices, each one carefully reviewed by a distinguished panel of 27 judges from varied backgrounds and expertise. Every submission is evaluated by two members of the panel, using a consistent set of criteria that considers both the quality of writing and production. Only the highest-scoring entries earn the prestigious Firebird Award.
More than just an award entry, participants in the Firebird Book Awards contribute to a larger mission.
“Your entry fee is more than just a fee—it’s a tax-deductible donation that supports women and children experiencing homelessness,” explained Founder Patricia J. Rullo. “When you enter, you’re not just seeking recognition—you’re helping turn shelters into homes filled with color and comfort.” They hand-make colorful pillowcases and send them, along with uplifting children’s books, to shelters including the nonprofit Enchanted Makeovers.
“Winning the Firebird Book Award for Benny’s Big Heart is such a meaningful moment for me, not just as an author, but as someone who deeply believes in the power of kindness, connection, and community,” Montgomery said about the award. “This book celebrates a real therapy dog who brings comfort to people of all ages, and it’s been a joy to see how Benny’s story has touched hearts near and far. I hope this recognition helps even more readers discover the healing and hope that a big-hearted dog and a caring community can bring.”
