flood wall - open house 4

A short video presentation showed where the wall would be located in Sugar Alley, just off Broadway

While there is some information on the proposed flood wall on the City of Alton’s website, there are those who would like to see more. One sticking point for resident Libby Reuter, who has repeatedly addressed the council on this topic, is a lack of a cost-benefit analysis.

The project has also caught the eye of 3rd Ward Alderman Mike Velloff.

As presented in February, the cast-in-concrete base, hybrid-style wall would be installed mainly in the Sugar Alley area with the ability to add hydro-planks during major flooding events. The wall would be between two and three and a half feet high when not used as a flood barrier, but when in use could protect downtown against a 100-year flood event. It would not impede flow of traffic, still allow for parking, and be low enough to not obstruct the view.  The wall would also extend to Williams Street to the west and near Broadway and Piasa to the east.
