LINVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A western North Carolina nonprofit nature park is mourning the loss of one of its cherished river otters, who passed away at the beginning of October.

Grandfather Mountain is remembering the life of beloved river otter Nova, who died on Oct. 1 following complications from a suspected blood clot during a dental procedure, according to the park. She was 12 years old.

“Nova will be greatly missed by all who knew her, from staff to guests alike, but most of all by her keepers and her best friend, Oscar,” said Christie Tipton, animal habitats curator for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, via a release from the park.

Nova arrived at Grandfather Mountain in August 2013 when she was six months old. Park officials believe she was separated from her mother during heavy rainstorms. Nova was taken to Lincoln County for a rehabilitative “otter training camp,” where she learned how to swim, explore, eat and play.

Nova is remembered for her affection toward people and playfulness, as well as her bond with another otter named Oscar, with whom she shared her habitat.

To honor Nova’s life and legacy, park officials say donations can be made in her memory to the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation to support the care of its resident animals.
