Leading candidate for the Rangers job Steven Gerrard has broken his silence amid talks over a return to the club.

And he has namechecked a former Ibrox ally with the US owners keen to bring back the 55th title-winning hero after axing Russell Martin.

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of the 49ers Enterprises have held initial discussions with the title-winning Ibrox gaffer in London on Thursday – with further sit-downs are planned for the coming days.

Amid the growing noise, Gerrard took to social media to shout out former Ibrox coach Tom Culshaw.

Culshaw worked in the Liverpool academy alongside the Anfield icon before following him north of the border to Rangers first-time around.

Culshaw then joined Aston Villa with Gerrard in 2021 – and would go with the 45-year-old to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard shared a snap with the coach to his Instagram alongside a birthday message.

Culshaw could make a return to the Glasgow giants if Gerrard lands the job – with the Englishman already eyeing an experienced assistant boss in Steve Holland.

But with Marathe and Cavenagh meeting other candidates for the hot seat – including former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl – fans will be made to wait for a sensational return.

Hugh Keevins reckons that the wheels are in motion for an arrival ahead of the restart of the Scottish Premiership campaign against Dundee United by the middle of next week.

The Record Sport columnist told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: “I would have been astounded if Rangers had named their manager a matter of days after getting rid of Russell Martin. That decision was taken last Sunday.

“I assume Andrew Cavenagh boarded a plane from Pennsylvania on Monday having already written the open letter to fans saying it would be a rigorous and thoughtful process of replacing Russell Martin.

“They have to speak to other people than Steven Gerrard. They have to meet with more people than Steven Gerrard, and they have to give it some thought as they said – a thoughtful process.

“And that is why one conversation with Steven Gerrard is insufficient, and they will have more than one conversation with Steven Gerrard and with others.

“I would imagine that some point next week – by the middle of next week – I would expect Rangers to have a new manager and I would expect it to be Steven Gerrard.”
