Alex de Minaur has lost in the quarterfinal of the Shanghai Masters, with Daniil Medvedev sending him sprawling out of the competition.

Last week, Jannik Sinner praised De Minaur after beating him in the semifinal of the China Open, and it was frustration once again for the Australian, who couldn’t cope with a rampant Medvedev.

De Minaur has been tweaking his game as he admitted this week and clearly, he’s showing that he’s got what it takes to keep progressing to quarters and semis at events.

However, with Arthur Rinderknech waiting in the wings and not a player like Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz, De Minaur might look back on this defeat as a missed opportunity.

Still, all is not lost, and despite this defeat at the hands of the Russian, there is some good news for De Minaur to ponder on his flight back to Australia.

Despite losing in straight sets to Medvedev, it would appear that De Minaur will now be taking part in the end-of-year ATP Finals in Turin.

De Minaur will have welcomed the win for Rinderknech over Felix Auger-Aliassime as it now means that the Canadian is close to needing snookers to make the ATP Finals.

De Minaur occupies seventh place on the list at the moment, with Lorenzo Musetti a handful of points further back in eighth, with a couple of tournaments left to secure a place.

With Jack Draper calling time on 2025, Auger-Aliassime is currently occupying the place outside the top eight and now he might need to win a tournament before the year is out to qualify.

That bodes well for De Minaur, who will be hoping for another crack at the game’s elite players when the event gets underway in Turin.

Alex de Minaur’s record at the ATP Finals

De Minaur has been told what he must do to compete for Grand Slam titles in the future and he does have some work to do if he’s to get to that point.

De Minaur made his debut at the ATP Finals last year and it’s fair to say that it didn’t exactly go according to plan.

The Australian came in as the seventh seed and lined up in a group with Jannik Sinner, Medvedev and Taylor Fritz.

Not only did De Minaur fail to win any of his three matches, but he also only won one set during his time on the court and he will be keen for another crack at things.
