REDDING, Calif — Professional tennis made its annual return to Shasta County this week, with the $30,000 dollar Merrill Lynch Women’s Open at Sun Oaks Tennis Club in Redding.
For three decades, the club has hosted professional tennis tournaments, drawing players from all over the world. The club has partnered with the Ascension Project – a local, non-profit which has raised over $2 million dollars to help develop young players in the early stages of their careers and mentor them to becoming leaders both on and off the court.
Many local players got their professional start at this USTA Pro-Circuit event over the years, including some who have cracked the top 100 in the world. While others who have played in years past have earned college scholarships to continue playing at the next level coming out of high school.
The semi-finals and finals are set to take place this weekend on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday October 12th. You can check the Sun Oaks website for match times.
