Oscar-winning actor and famed style icon Diane Keaton has died at 79 and is survived by two children.

The “Annie Hall” star adopted daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, when she was in her 50s, and subsequently raised them as a single mother.

In a 2008 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, Diane Keaton called motherhood “an urge I couldn’t resist,” adding, “it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time.”

“I’ve had such an unusual life. Obviously career-oriented. I was happy to be a daughter well into my 40s. That was something that meant a lot to me,” she said. “I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother.”

Diane Keaton told the magazine she originally wanted to be in a “strong and substantive” relationship before having a child, explaining that “never happened for me, and that prolonged my indecisiveness.”

While Diane Keaton dated several fellow Hollywood greats, including Al Pacino, Woody Allen and Warren Beatty, she never married and, in 2021, told Interview magazine why.

Speaking about her own mother’s choice to wed, Diane Keaton said at the time, “I feel like she chose family over her dreams. And she was just the best mother, but I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married. I didn’t want to give up my independence.”

The actor rarely brings her two children into the limelight, but they did accompany her in 2022 to a ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
