Malayalam actress Krishna Praba has come under heavy criticism on social media for trivialising mental health issues.
In a recent interview, she suggested that depression and mood swings are a result of having no work, dismissing these conditions as mere overthinking.
“Overthinking is what many people call depression. New terms are coming now… mood swings,” Krishna Praba said with a laugh during an interview.
She added, “We just jokingly say these things. It’s the same old thing (vattu), only now it’s called depression. This happens because some have nothing to do. If a person is always busy, many of these issues can be avoided,” she said in a mocking tone.
Her remarks sparked widespread outrage on social media, drawing responses from health experts and celebrities alike.
Singer Anju Joseph also responded, urging the actress to approach the topic with awareness.
“With all due respect, Krishnapraba !! Pls educate yourself about these mental health issues!! There are people who suffer a lot bcoz of these issues!! Elon musk in March 2025 said that he is taking medicines for depression! Deepika Padukone opened up about this!! Are these guys not busy? It can happen to you even if you are busy or not!! It’s an actual disease!! Pls don’t use words like vattu!! I have nothing against you personally! But as a person who has suffered both clinical depression and anxiety disorder I can say that mental health issues are real!! And they don’t just pop up because you are not busy!! Pls educate yourself on these topics even if you are joking or kidding about this!!,” she wrote in a video posted by Krishna Praba.
